The History
On Sunday, December 5, 1954, the Sterry Church building was burned to the ground. The Tiffany stained glass windows donated by C.W. Sterry’s daughters, shattered beyond repair.
In 2022 the Sterry Stained Glass Project Team organized to meet a growing interest in the congregation to replace the frosted sanctuary glass with stained glass. Memorial gifts and over 30 donors have led to The Great Unveiling of the first two windows.

A Pastoral Anecdote
Several years ago, I entered the church building (the doors are usually open for all the wrong reasons like really helpful people forgetting to lock them). When I have a few minutes, I go into the sanctuary to play a hymn on the piano as part of my meditation and prayer. I was surprised by a young woman, who lives across the street from the church, sitting in a pew. She was gazing at the Rose Window above the altar. She jumped up and said, “I’m sorry. Sometimes I sneak in here to pray. I stare at the image of the Lamb of God. My Grandma would bring me to church here when I was a little girl and the only words I remember Pastor Hughes preaching were, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.’” This encounter moved me to begin responding to the growing desire within our congregation to install more stained glass windows.

On behalf of Sterry Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Stained Glass Window Project Teams extends gratitude to God for the many donors, who have given generously and self-sacrificially to adorn the sanctuary. The team has honored the wishes of Memorial designations resulting in two names of Sterry members painted and glazed into the stained glass:
The window depicting Jesus blessing the children includes “In memory of Larry Sorenson.”
The window depicting the Nativity includes “In memory of Landon Samuel Smyser.”

In December of 2024,
we dedicated the windows at our Christmas Eve service. It was a beautiful evening of worship, community and remembrance.
Thank you
to Jason Lore (installation coordinator), Russ Somers from Somers & Sons Masonry, Brad Case & Harrison Lore for all of your help with the demolition and install of the windows. We couldn’t have done it without you.
